MAAT Museum, Portugal

MAAT, the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, is an outward-looking museum located on the banks of the Tagus in Lisbon City of Portugal. MAAT is a powerful yet sensitive and low-slung building that explores the convergence of contemporary art, architecture and technology. The building, designed by Amanda Levete, looks fantastic and due to the organic forms the huge white building does not end but blends into the surroundings. Building on Portugal’s rich tradition of craft and ceramics, three-dimensional crackle glazed tiles articulate the façade and produce a complex surface that gives mutable readings of water, light and shadow.

Incorporating over 9,000m² of new public space and blending structure into landscape, the building is designed to allow visitors to walk over, under and through the building that sits beneath a gently expressed arch. The roof becomes an outdoor room where visitors can enjoy the vista of the cityscape, and at night, watch a film with Lisbon as a backdrop.

During the first year of opening, MAAT welcomed over 500,000 visitors, making it more popular than any public Portuguese museum. MAAT has won numerous awards including Best of Best Iconic Award 2017, ECCS Steel Design Award of Merit 2017; Highly Commended, Blueprint Awards 2017; finalist, Tiles of Spain Awards 2017, Best Museum Architecture, Leading Cultural Destination Awards 2017, etc.
