Suzhou Center Mall, China

Suzhou Center mall, designed by Benoy, is located on a 16 ha site along the bank of Jinji Lake, in China. Benoy was asked to bring large-scale high-end leisure and retail aspect to the Suzhou Industrial Park. Comprised of seven stories, six of which being above ground and one retail basement level, the 300,000 m² Suzhou Center Mall is the largest mall in the city.

It comprises Retail, Commercial Offices, Residential and a Hotel as well as entertainment and cultural spaces including children’s attractions, a cinema and ice rink. The Mall features 60,000m2 of lush greenery across its numerous outdoor terraces, rooftops and the landscaped cantilever bridges.

Suzhou Center also boasts the world’s largest free-form monocoque roof at over 36,000 m². Two giant LED screens, each measuring 20m in height and 70m in width, artfully integrate with the design of the monocoque roof and offer stunning picture quality when turned on. Benoy’s design for the roof was inspired by the mythical Chinese phoenix. Another prominent feature in Benoy’s design is ‘Water’, taking inspiration from the neighboring Jinji Lake scenery. A cascading ‘Water curtain’ spanning 50m pays homage to the local environment.

The development is dual-certified by China’s Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development as a Two-star Green Building Design Label, and by the United States Green Building Council as LEED Gold. The mall has also won numerous awards such as the Gold Award at the 2015 MIPIM Asia Awards, a Highly Commended Award for Retail Architecture in China at the 2016 Asia Pacific Property Awards and etc.
